Congratulations to all winners at the 41st Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.
We want to give a special mention to National Geographic’s The Nightcrawlers, post-produced at The Farm and produced by Violet Films.
The Nightcrawlers is an unflinching, verite-style expose that follows a determined group of photojournalists on their mission to chronicle the deadly battle being waged against the Philippines' drug epidemic - and the tragic cost of this brutal crusade. This is a dangerous world that director Alexander A. Mora brings his cameras into, a world existing in the shadows and shrouded in darkness.
It was this footage shot in low light conditions that proved to be the biggest challenge for Farm colourist, Sonny Sheridan. He began by cleaning up the noise, utilising Clarity within Nucoda’s DVO tool set. Sonny was then able to push the material to its limits to help achieve the urban, futuristic look of the director’s vision.
Steve Speed (mixer) and Will Chapman (tracklay) were given full creative license to achieve this ambition on the soundtrack. They both felt it was important to respect the source material and therefore took great care in restoring and mixing the sync dialogue in order to build the many layers of FX and atmos around it that are necessary to give the doc as full and immersive a soundtrack as possible.
Throughout the process, Steve enjoyed a great creative relationship with the director that allowed him to bring out all the fine details and create an engrossing dynamic between the intimate moments and the wider cinematic soundscape.
On the award win, Steve commented, “It was such a privilege to work on this stunning film for Violet Films. The project was a real work of creative ambition and mutual working respect, and I couldn’t be happier that it’s received the recognition it deserves!”
